wanna-help-can you explane whats in your sauces? chicken or steak with red onion, mushrooms caps, peppers
lamb ones with lots of rosemary, thyme & garlic
sauce I like a nice mojito sauce or chimichurri Lamb - with nothing but a side pot of garlic mayo please!!!! Hi
Donner with a pot of yogurt and a pot of chili no veg I love a large mixed kebab on nan bread with everything on it except chilli sauce.I think i need one now ive just answered your question, lol Large Mixed with a bit of salad and far too much chilli sauce please. Chicken shish kebab for me, proper bits of meat, none of that donner rubbish. Masses of salad on it and a good drizzling of honey & mustard dressing on it. seekh or shammi kebabs with cilantro chutney and imli (tamarind) chutney. beef with grilled onions and tomatoes with white sauce! Kebab is the Turkish word for roast meat. D?ner kebab is meat wrapped round a skewer and roasted. The meat is beef, chicken, lamb or goat. If it's pork, then strictly speaking it's Greek and called gyros.
My favourite is Adana kebab which is minced lamb/goat mixed with herbs and wrapped round individual skewers and barbecued.
I don't know what Naan bread is. Naan is the Indo/Persian/Kurdish word for bread! So if you say naan bread, you're saying bread bread.
I like my kebabs with yogurt and chili sauce accompanied with salad. Are we talking about 'kebaps' or something else? Kebap (meat/chicken grilled over charcoal) is essentially Turkish/Middle Eastern. I can see that our traditional kebaps are being confused with something else, and/or adulterated with strange sauces.
We do not put sauces on kebaps (lamb shish-kebap, chicken shish-kebap, lamb chops, doner kebap, Adana kebap, Urfa kebap etc). We do marinade the meat though with herbs and spices etc.
When we consume kebaps, the main dishes that accompany them are:
yogurt, salads, tahini salad, hummus, cacik, and various other local side dishes (meze/appetizers). But we do not put sauces on our kebaps except doner kebap, which then is called Iskender kebap.
Iskender Kebap was created by a Turkish chef in the city of Bursa, named Iskender.
He put a layer of chopped up pide (pitta) on a large oval plate. Soaked them meat meat broth and drained. Then he put a layer of beaten up natural yoghurt on the pieces of pide. On top of that he placed the long slices of doner kebap. Finally, he poured on top of all warm tomato sauce and hot, sizzling, melted butter. His son still continues business in Bursa, although almost all doner houses in Turkey serve Iskender kebap.
edit: most Turkish kebaps are either lamb or chicken. Doner is preferably made from veal/beef. I take it you mean from the take-away shop?
If that the case it has to be Chicken Shish with salad, easy on onions, no pickled chilli, with mint sauce or Lamb Shish with the same. We had kebabs the other night but Hubby got me mine with chilli sauce and all the works! Oh, did I have sore botty next day!!!
We had Pork Gyros on holiday a couple of years back and they are delicious! Sooo tasty, it's pork doner, (slabs of pork seasoned a skewered on a huge skewer which goes round and slices of meat are carved off it,) lettuce, onions, cucumber and tomato, tzatsiki, a few french fries and a dusting of paprika all wrapped into a pitta cone. Amazing!
At home on the bbq we like pork or chicken cubed and marinated and skewered with variety of veg like mushrooms, peppers, courgette and onion. Or I like to make chicken satay skewers.
Saying that, we're going to have bbq for dinner tonight with tikka cod kebabs, sun-dried tomato and herb prawn skewers. Donner with loads of mayo.
I'd settle with a chicken though yummy =D
Hmm maybe i should get one tonight!!
Whats your fav? My favorite is Chicken with red onion, green bell pepper, cherry tomatoes, fresh pineapple chunks, & mushroom caps! I season with salt, pepper, garlic & a little cayenne. Sometimes if I'm using canned pineapple, I'll use the juice to brush on the kebobs while grilling. Yummy I make chicken kebabs (marinated spicy chicken, peppers, onions) and eat them in chappattis with chopped onion and tomato and a little cucumber, with a yogurty spicy dressing and a dollop of mango chutney.
