Indian Food - very thick and green and DELICIOUS soup - what is it called?


I ate at a local Indian restaurant last night and ordered Mulligatawny soup for the first time. I thought it was supposed to be more creamy with chicken. I have to say it was delicious but not what I thought. It was more like maybe creamed spinach with coconut milk for thickening - and great spice flavors I also thought I could taste the green herb they use in Mexican salsa. Definitely you could eat it with a Nan bread for a meal!! Very filling. I have looked for a recipe that comes close to what it would look and taste like, but nothing in the "Muligatawny soup" recipes looks like it has anything green in it. Any ideas what it was, and does anybody have a recipe??


Answers: There are many many variations for Mulligatawny soup, but I have never heard of what you described!

It does sound more like spinach soup (or even saarson ki saag), maybe they brought out the wrong order? Probably had alot of cilantro.

If you go there again, just ask! What is their menu description of mulligatawny soup? Sounds more like they got the order wrong! As mulligatawny soup is actually an Anglo Indian dish, there are as many recipes as there are restaurants that serve it.
In India, the use of coconut milk is commonplace in the South, whereas in the North, there is no such thing as a coconut based dish.

The soup you had is very likely a propriety recipe. May be you could ask the restaurant for it.
Or you could experiment on your own - it seems a pretty simple combination to me: make a dal based soup, add (Madras) curry powder, spinach, coconut milk, fresh coriander, and seasoning.
