Do you know what "Schmand" is? This is a German word.?!
Answers: We have a German recipe that calls for Schmand and can not find an English translation. It is similar to whip cream... that's all we know. If you know what we can use in America to substitute for Schmand in a recipe, please answer. :)
Schmand is another word for souer milk. It is made of whole milk that is left out. The milk fat rises to the top and forms a solid mass that is then teken off. The best substitute you can get is probably sour cream that is thinned a little with buttermilk.
It's not a word. Sorry
I just ran it through a translator and nothing came up in German.

schmand is sour cream quite good in salad sauces i know my wife uses it all the time when she makes a salad with our dinner don't listen to those people who say its not a word they know NOTHING
Schmand is a dairy product, a variety of sour cream similar to crème fra?che.Schmand is widely used in many Eastern European cuisines, for example, blended into thick soups like borscht (beet soup) or served on the plate with boiled dumplings, there are also very popular salads with Schmand.
Since Schmand is not readily available in the United States (although it does exist here), a pureed combination of cream cheese and cottage cheese is a great way to make a substitution for it.
The answers above are right. It's a kind of German sour cream. And it is a word. I know ... I'm German.
