What is a tortilla in Spain?!

Answers: My teacher said that it is not the same as in the U.S.
The best way to describe is a potato pie made with egg... a heap sliced potatoes cooked in a pan of oil, once cooked, drain out excess oil and add as much egg (that has been beat) as the pan will take. Let set on one side. Put a plate on the top of the pan and flip onto the plate and slip back into the pan to cook the other side. The result will be like a pie. When done you remove it by putting the plate back on top and flip the pan to get the tortilla onto the plate. The part cooked last will be the side that everyone will see. Sooo if you want you can decorate it (with any kind of veggie) before you cook this side.
Once you get the hang of cooking it you can start to add other ingredients like onion, asparagus or whatever you fancy.
You can eat it hot or cold. I've even had a slice put between two slices of Spanish bread as a sandwich. You can cut it as a pie or squares and serve as an appetizer.

A traditional spanish tortilla consists of eggs, potatoes and onions. It's usually cooked, allowed to cool, and then cut into pieces. Although a tortilla has a lot of eggs in it, it really doesn't have the consistency of an omellet. It's more like potatoes and onions held together by eggs. The pieces are dense and soft. It is delicious!

The tortilla de patatas, tortilla Espa?ola, or Spanish omelette or (in The Americas, the Canary Islands and the southern part of peninsular Spain) tortilla de papas (not to be confused with the Mexican/Central American flatbread also known as tortilla), is an egg omelette with fried potatoes. Frequently it also includes onion, depending on region or taste. The potatoes are fried in oil (preferably olive oil), and are then mixed with raw scrambled eggs before being slowly re-fried. It is one of the most common tapas throughout Spain.
