Another sushi question?!

Question: I have a friend who wants to go out with me for sushi, but she is deathly allergic to shell fish. Is it safe for her to eat sushi? Are the shell fish kept separate from the other fish types?

As somebody of Japanese Heritage... I can assure you... Not all sushi contains fish or shellfish. And sushi is not raw fish either. Raw fish is Sashimi. Also not all fish and shellfish used in sushi is raw. Most of it is actually cooked.

Inari sushi is safest and tasty. (it's just seasoned rice in a fried, marinated soybean pocket.)

Tamago is the omelette and seasoned rice in nori (seaweed)

Vegetable Maki is seasoned rice and any single or combination of veggies such as Oshinko (pickled radish), Kappa (cucumber) etc.

Your friend will have many tasty options from which to choose. Also, you can always tell your sushi master about the allergy just to be sure all shellfish ingredients are kept out.

As for the ingredients themselves. Yes. All items are kept separate to keep the flavours clean and pure until the sushi master combines them.

It might be a real good idea to ask the chefs. They can prepare the sushi extra carefully. It should not be a problem, but I would play it WAY safe.

Your friend can order sushi made with veggies instead of seafood.

get california rolls- made with pollock- it's the stuff artificial crab legs are made of
or else there is sushi made with tuna-it's not a shellfish

yes it is safe, just ask the waiter about the sushi with no shellfish. they have one with sauteed veggies, avocado and tuna. they are many sushi withouth shellfish

As many of the other people said, there are many types of non-shellfish sushi. But if she's DEATHLY allergic, you may want to be careful on how and where they prepare the food. Make sure they use a different counter space and change gloves if they use them. There are people out there who just inhale molecules of the food they're allergic to and have a severe reaction, so find out what her body can tolerate as far as food preparation.

It really depends on the place you go to, all raw meats and fish and such are supposed to be kept seperate, i would be a little nervous eating there if she is very allergic, you never know if the chef washed his hands good, or changed the untiensils.
