How long does saffron last?!

Question: I was given a bottle of the spice saffron from Kuwait about a year ago. Is it still ok to cook with it?

Is it still floral and fragrant? Then it's fine to use as long as you stored it in an air tight container in your cupboard or pantry. It last forever really. Never, never, never the refrigerator! The saffron threads become brittle and when you touch them, they will crumble and fall apart. They are so fragile and delicate, you will end up with saffron dust, and that's not good.

The best saffron in the world is from Spain and then Iran. Never tried saffron from Kuwait, all my Kuwaiti friends buy expensive high end Spanish saffron!

100,000 years typically if refrigerated

Longer than sassafrass

It should be fine. :)

Any spice might last long but if it is foreign it will be stilll good even by 6 years

I usually pass it in about 8 hours. It doesn't come out yellow though.

We had some at about a constant 80* temps in a kitchen and we had it for 5 plus months and it was good

I'm just mad about Saffron, Saffron's mad about me...

I'm just mad about saffron...saffron's mad about me...they call me mellow yellow, thye call me mellow yellow....Man that was a great song by Donovan....

if it has been in a tightly sealed container and not exposed to too much light it may still be ok... but not ideal... Id suggest getting some fresh at the local grocer or specialty shop... it isnt really all that expensive, since a little goes a long way.

cheers!

up to 5 years go ahead and use it!

Saffron should be stored in an airtight container and kept away from moisture and bright light. Bright light such as sunlight will bleach the color of saffron. That is why when the crocus flower blooms, the flower has to be picked at dawn (Sahar) before the sun shines on it. Also do not expose your saffron to the moisture. Do not open your jar of saffron near a boiling pot of water in the kitchen.

Saffron can be stored for several years (at least 3-5 yrs) and will retain most of its potency if stored properly.

Yeah it will last a few years

Yes. It's definitely ok to cook with it. Dont know how much is still left in the bottle -- coook same dish w/ old and new saffron. ask someone to be a judge of it ;)
