What is that Wasabi stuff I got with my Sushi?!

Question: what it is, is hot as hell the first time i ate it i took a great big chunk (cleared out my sinus's for about a month) it is a Japanese horseradish with a few extras (it's really good but use very sparingly) I'm telling you I love Mexican food but these Mexican spices have nothing on wasabi lol

Japanese horseradish

It's basically horseradish, it's very spicy and makes the sushi taste better

Wasabi (Japanese: わさび, 山葵 (originally written 和佐比)) ; Wasabia japonica, Cochlearia wasabi, or Eutrema japonica) is a member of the cabbage family. Known as Japanese horseradish, its root is used as a spice and has an extremely strong flavor. Its hotness is more akin to that of a hot mustard than the capsaicin in a chili pepper, producing vapors that irritate the nasal passages more than the tongue. The plant grows naturally along stream beds in mountain river valleys in Japan. There are also other species used, such as W. koreana, and W. tetsuigi. The two main cultivars in the marketplace are W. japonica var. Duruma and Mazuma, but there are many others.

it's a dried up japanese root same family as horseradish , read that it's good against cavities (anti-microbial properties)
as well as giving sushi its kick !

Its a member of the cabbage family though the root has a similar taste to horseradish. I dilute it with a little soy otherwise it makes my sinuses hurt.

Japanese horseradish

Wasabi is a horseradish like root that is really strong! You mix the wasabi powder with water and you get the wasabi that is on your plate. I like to call it green death paste.
The other person that said it is fake seaweed is incorrect. FYI, the "fake" seaweed is in fact dried seaweed and is called nori, which is a very common ingredient in Japanese cuisine.
Hope this helps!

Wasabi is a rout that only grows in some micro climates in Japan. It is very expensive and difficult to grow. In Japan, you can have paper thin slices of wasabi on your sushi. It tastes a bit like horseradish and can be made into a paste to be served with sushi. Most wasabi in the US is a mix of horseradish and powdered wasabi and is nothing like the real thing. Whole Foods serves packets of finely chopped wasabi with it's sushi, but it is also mixed with horseradish I believe.

It is a Japanese horseradish that is very spicy.

I don't know but having read the other answers it sounds OK - better than the sushi anyway.

errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr wasabi?

spicy stuff

that, green paste (wasabi) is Japanese horse radish it's very hot you mix it with, sour sauce and ginger, and it gives your sushi a better- taste.

Don't You Love It!? I have to buy that stuff in the store now all the time! Wasabi is the bomb on Roast Beef and real Turkey sandwiches, it is great mixed in with salad dressing (well some of them) I have just abused that stuff!

Word of caution:

Do not use if barely clothed or naked!

Word.

it's Chinese horseradish

It's like fake seaweed. pleugh!
