What's with sushi?!
Answers: I like it and all, but I don't see what's so spectacular about it. It's just seafood on top of rice or rolled up. Also what are some really good or expensive types? Why is sushi tuna so expensive? It's like $15/lb.
At the Tsukiji Fish Market (Tokyo Central Wholesale Market) - the world's largest fish market - a blue fin tuna can cost as much as USD20,000 (2.5metre fish). This insatiable appetite of the Japanese for this specie has resulted in "overfishing" and has drastically depleted stocks. The cuts in tuna quotas will cost Sushi Lovers.
Sushi, sashimi form the national diet of Japan where "freshness" of the catch is everything. (Canned tuna bits are not valued nor popular at all). Sushi like everything foreign is an acquired taste; either you like it or not. What's so great about hamburgers?
Since its not cooked it has to be A grade which is the highest quality
What is spectacular about it, is the skill it takes to make it. The knife cuts from the chef have to be precise. Also, the quality of the seafood. Since it is eaten raw, it must be of the highest quality. Tuna is so expensive because it is usually blue or yellowfin species. The typical canned tuna is albecore at best, which a different, lower grade species. Good sushi, from a good place, will be beautiful to look at, and wonderful to eat. It should also be really fresh, since it doesnt keep well.
Well, Seymour, I have to say I disagree. The taste may be subtle but it's the best food in the world. The variety is incredible and the eating experience is second to none.
Like all things which become 'fashionable' the market dictates the price .. I make my own Sushi and, apart from it being healthy, I can vary the flavours to suit my mood
