Women & sushi?!

Question: Is it true that women (traditionally) can not prepare sushi because their body temperature is different and it will affect the taste of the fish? If so then WTF? I heard this because there is an Asian women teaching women how to make sushi, and the article was about how they will have to start their own restaurants because traditional places will not hire them. Any thoughts?

This is true, the art of sushi making was always considered a man's job!! But times are changing....

This is a great article:

I've never heard that before. I think most restaurants don't hire women to make sushi because it is viewed as a job usually filled by men. In Texas, many sushi restaurants have Hispanics making the sushi. Just take a look next to you are in a sushi restaurant.

Basically, men and women and people of all races can make sushi, however, restaurants tend to hire Asian looking males to make sushi for appearance reasons, maybe they feel it adds to the authenticity of the sushi or restaurant.

rubbish i think its coz Japanese culture have mentality of being sexist pigs so i think rubbish like tat was made up as an excuse to stop women from doing it

Come to think of eat I've never seen a woman prepare my sushi hmmm interesting.

I worked in Japan a few years back and while you do not see alot of women working in restaurant's making sushi, they prepare it at home, or buy it premade.

The apprenticship to become a certified sushi chef in Japan can take between 7-10 years the first few year are spent just learning to make the rice and meanial jobs, then you graduate to trimming and cutting the fish for the master to make the sushi, this is when you learn the techniques of cooking eels, opening sea urchins and trimming/opening/shucking other seafoods for production, around the last 3-4 years after you have mastered the basics and are ready to attain the right to make sushi you are then schooled in the various types, styles and methods of sushi making.

There are more women in Japan now taking the time to train, and most places like the imagine of and Asian person doing ( like Benihana, Panda Chinese and Japan Noodle Houses), but like the one fellow said, in place you have to do with what you have, when I worked there even though they have all the U.S chain fast food outlets they slightly geared to the Japanese palate, just like in India because of religous views they have fewer beef burgers and more alternative items, In Japan, I saw in a Pizza Hut there, them piling on the mayonaisse and Tabasco sauce, just there way??
