What is considered authentic American food?!

Question: I'm American but I don't know what is considered authentic American food... I mean all I see is fry chicken, burgers, and all that junk. Also in my state theres a lot of different cultures of foods that are Americanized. SO I am confuse what can be considered our food.

I got pen pals in Japan asking me and they say that they wanna eat like us Americans. Pfft at least they got pretty healthy authentic foods... I mean we got mostly fast foods here so what can I tell them? Well my family sometimes has New York steak. I mostly eat meat, veggies, and rice all togehter every day because my mom can cook.

Thanks for reading.

America has its take on several different kinds of cuisine, such as Chinese, Japanese, Italian, etc. As you may have noticed, the dishes offered in such places here, aren't always found on menus of the restaurants on which the cuisine is based. This isn't always the case, however. There are many gems out there which offer true cuisine native to their country.

As I'm guessing in Japan there are different regions with different signature culinary dishes, this is also the case in the U.S. There exists signature flavors and dishes for every region and state. Here are a few dishes which were (to my knowledge), all invented in America. (I tried to think of some more healthy ones, but kind of drew a blank).
Macaroni and Cheese
Hamburger
Waldorf Salad
BBQ
Grits
Jambalaya
Buffalo Chicken Wings
Chicken Fingers
Apple pie
Wraps (fruit, salad, sandwich)
Philly Cheesesteak
Clam chowders-Manhattan, Rhode Island, New England
Sub sandwiches

Hope these help. Japanese food is great...I'm a little jealous.

"Authentic" American food, in my opinion, is pretty much anything that's considered "junk" or "tastes good." Other than that, the only foods I can think of are hot dogs and hamburgers. And I think the sandwich was made in a America..I'm not sure.

Authentic food from most cultures was stolen from another earlier culture. Since America is made up of immigrants from almost every area of the world, we have pockets of our country where our diets vary significantly. Apple Pie and Hot dogs are generally considered generic american although they both came from Europe.

More Authentic would be the Southern Pork Barbecue, Grits also from the south. I don't know of any other culture that has a barbecue that mimics the carolina preparation or a culture that serves corn like grits.
A pastrami sandwich from NYC would be original. A cheese steak from Philadelphia would be original. Chicago style pizza is pretty unique to America.
You will find unique items in almost every area of the united states that would be a best representative of "American Food"

"AUTHENTIC" american food is junk food !!

Think regional foods:

Pot Roast
Mashed Potatoes
Apple Pie, Key Lime pie
Egg Rolls (they were invented in Calif.)
Coca-Cola, Dr. Pepper
Gumbo, Jambalaya, Etouffee
Corn on the Cob, Corn Pudding, Corn bread
Chili
Clam Chowder
Lobster Rolls
Meatloaf
Jello and Jello Salads
Fried Chicken
Hamburgers
Sloppy Joes
Poboys, Submarines, Hoagies, Grinders
Pralines
Banana Pudding

go to applebees or tgi fridays.. anything on the menu is considered american
