What was this food - ethnic cuisine?!

Question: it was an 'ethnic cuisine' night

the food was like a doughnut, but savory,
it was cut across the top - kind of like a kebab - and was filled with a thick meaty stew like filling

any ideas what it was called and what it's ethnicity

Could possibly be 'Bunny Chow' which has nothing to do with 'bunnies' LOL It's a curry stuffed into a hollowed out bread - the bread soaks up the juices which softens it and it is cooked with the meat stuffing inside

Personally, I think you were eating a Vetkoek (origin Dutch settlers) which is a traditional Afrikaan pastry. It is dough deep-fried in cooking oil and either filled with cooked mince or from tradition spread with syrup or honey. It may have originated with Olibolen of Dutch origin which were sweet dough balls.

sounds like "vol-au-vents".....

A french dish...puff pastry shells ....filled with whatever you want.

You can buy the shells (they are called "patty shells" in the USA)...in the frozen food section at the grocery store.

They are flat pieces of puff pastry, that when baked, "grows" into a cup-like shell with a little pastry "lid".....

You can also fill vol au vents with sweet fillings, or creamed meats, or stews.

Doesn't sound like "vol-au-vents", .

Maybe a bagel? bread type of doughnut, you can put almost any filling in.

If it was small, it might have been shui mai, Chinese dumplings. Or perhaps a meat knish.

This could be just a small sour dough loaf filled with stew or soup.

Though it may also be a roti. Carribean/North African bread that is filled often times with stews and curries.

Sounds as though it could be a Yorkshire Pudding and that is a very traditional way of serving it in Britain. Originated in Yorkshire, obviously.
