Can Tempura be baked and still turn out ok?!
I'm a vegetarian (well I eat some fish now) who's moving to Japan in March and is trying to cook Japanese foods so I can assimilate easier when I get there. I love tempura but am dieting...so can it be baked intead of deep fried?
Also, what other Japanese foods might you suggest I try?

Well Sushi is a good low fat japanese food, and if you dont wanna eat fish, they have ones with tofu, or cucumber. Also popular food is okazu, its like stirfired veggies with rice. and Goya is like really popular vegetable, its bittermelon, but its really good for you.
since the definition of tempura is frying it, baking it just won't turn out the same. it may still be delicious in a different way though. i would suggest experimenting with it and see how you like it!
um i think it would be gross if you baked it the whole point is that its fired , if you baked it , it would be like vegetable cobbler
No. Tempura is supposed to be deep fried and the recipes depend upon that method to be good.
Tempura is to be fried. If you bake it, things will come out gummy.
If you want to cook healthier may I suggest searing your fish or veggies over very hot coals on a charcoal grill? You get real nice flavors. It just takes a little olive oil baste (healthy), salt & pepper. Some wood chunks around the charcoal for extra flavor?
Yes and it won't be Tempura.
Some vegetarian Japanese food that you can try is cold tofu, cold noodles (very appetising in summer!), the various pickles, okonomiyaki, etc.
