I think the cream cheese would melt. Have you tried looking for Indian or middle-eastern groceries in your neighborhood?

You might try any other low-fat cheese such as a part-skim mozzarella but try freezing it before you use it, so it won't be as likely to melt, and it will mostly just warm up a little. Try putting it into the dish a bit later, OR try turning up the heat in a pan but dropping the cheese in frozen -- it's likelier to sort of sear it on the outside without melting the cheese.

Just some thoughts, and I've tried most of them, for the same reasons.

Good luck with your curry. I find that it helps to warm the spices in a pan, then transfer them to a mortar and pestle and grind them, then put them back in the pan with a little ghee, butter or vegetable oil before cooking the rest of the stuff. But curry powder would also work. I like the sweet curry powders such as maharaja if that's the route you want to go.

Have fun!

try fetta cheese, its the same thing. and is available in all super markets.

on the internet which ever search engine you use type : receipes with cream cheese and it/ and it will have you many to choose from : example i typed in any receipes with tomatoe in them and i got, i found tomatoe in india receipe perserves sweet& sour a whole bunch tomatoe perserves or one ingredient search

I have made paneer out of ricotta cheese but can't imagine how you'd make paneer out of cream cheese.
Here is a recipe to make paneer at home...it is very simple...

As for the cream cheese...I would make a seven layer dip or some other dip and use it up.
G'Luck!

Make a cheesecake with the cream cheese or add a little curry powder to it and spread it on a toasted bagel.

As far as paneer, you can make it yourself or but the firm ricotta cheese brick, cube and fry. Another option is using extra firm tofu.

Cream cheese is hard to use in traditional Indian recipes since it's texture & properties are very different from paneer.
Paneer is very unique because it is a non-melting cheese and mainly the only Indian cheese.

You could flavor your cream cheese with a pinch of saffron, cardamom and nutmeg --- making it into a type of shrikand.
