Why is firm tofu called lao doufu in Chinese?!


Question: The brand of tofu I buy very logically says 中豆腐 on the cover of the medium tofu container. However, the firm tofu says 老豆腐. What is is about firm tofu that it's called old in Chinese? Can 老 mean hard or firm in addition to old?

Relates to culture and philosophy teaching indirectly of the word Lao. Firm, hard, wise, etc...= Laoxi. It passes down from older folks to their youngers for thousand of years through examples and all....

It means firm--God what the hell is the problem??

i think the longer they keep the tofu in the solution, the firimer it gets?
