It's exactly the same. In fact they have a soft serve machine that you take ice cream out of a half gallon of packed ice cream and it (as you say) mushes it up.

The air content would depend on the quality of the ice cream that you put into it (or mush up)

no.......

i guess so

i love soft ice cream

exactly the same
I fool my friends all the time

NO! the two are not the same or at least usually not. Regular full fat ice cream is made from cream and if it is of premium quality it will be quite high in fat. That's why it tastes so good. Try a high quality dipping store. Soft serve is usually low or no fat ice cream (like dairy queen). It soft because the machine does not freeze it as hard. It probably has about the same amount of "air" as regular ice cream except of course for the premiums again. That air is called overrun in the industry and typically you shoot for 100% (by volume). So the caloric difference is huge depending on what type of ice cream and what type of soft serve you are referring to.

Soft serve ice cream is basically just Ice cream which hasn't been put in the freezer to harden yet. You can easily make it at home with an ice cream maker by just not putting the ice cream in the freezer.
