Why cant you buy capons in Britain anymore.?!
Answers: Thought I would try a capon this Christmas cos turkeys are going to be really expensive but nobody seems to sell them
A capon is a chemically castrated male chicken to encourage breast meat (which is greater on a female bird than an uncastrated male) so you get a larger bird than a hen but with more breast than a cockrell. Most male birds are now culled at a day old (as they are distinguishable by different coloured feathers, you don't need to inspect their genitals to sex them) and sufficient females kept to fulfill the demand for chicken rather than pumping male birds full of artificial hormones. Just buy a large chicken - that is all a capon was prior to the banning of growth hormone use in animals for human consumption. Why would you want to eat a bird which has been so badly interfered with?
they are a bird and due to bird flu they won't be available.
you can get capons in britain still as i had one last christmas, unfortunately they are still quite expensive but are tastier than your supermarket chickens, i would talk to your local independant butcher about ordering one.
