Bought Cummin Seed but need ground?!
Answers: I bought some cummin seed today because it was the only thing i could find. The recipe that i'm using uses ground cummin. Is there anything i can do? Do i just use the seed?
You can use a coffee grinder, spice mill or a mortar and pestle.
If you don't have any of those, you can simply put some seeds on your cutting board and press down on them with a frying pan or something like that.
Or put them in a plastic bag and whack with a rolling pin or frying pan.
Or fold into a clean tea towel and hit them with the rolling pin or frying pan that way.
I wouldn't just use the seeds if it calls for ground. The flavour won't be near as good. The seeds would need to at least be broken to allow some of the flavours out.
Depending on the recipe, I would consider putting in a bit more of the cracked seeds to compensate for the uneven dispersal.
grind it in a coffee grinder
If you have a coffee grinder, just zap the seeds in it. The bonus is that it will be stronger than the ground cumin from the store. A lot more aromatic.
Do you have a coffee grinder? Wipe clean of all coffee, pour in seeds, grind away.
(PS this is also a great way for ground cloves as they cost 4x as much as whole!)
Or a pestle & mortar works too
