Toast originally began as a way of preserving bread.

Toasting was very popular among the Romans who gave it its modern name ("tostum" means scorching or burning).

Butter was used to add flavour to the bread eaten by the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt.

Well I can tell you this in culinary class. We learned that heat changes the taste of just about everything. Think of eating a piece of white bread then think about eating a toasted piece of white bread. The starch is carmelized and the flavor change is great. I am sure someone many years ago tried applying heat to everything! And for the adding butter. Fat or butter applied to anything will make anything taste better. Yum!

butter does taste good on toasted bread. my opinion on rye breads, but not toasted.

I don't care who discovered it. It's just plain yummy... all that melty, warm butter and perfectly toasty bread. :) ummmmm.....
