Pot Luck - does anyone else have a problem with this?!

Question: You know, people (sometimes people that you don't know) make a dish at home and bring it in, and then you are supposed to eat it. Perhaps I'm a germaphobe, but I don't know how clean their kitchen is or if they have a cat that walked across the countertops as they were making it, and licked at it. You know?
I have trouble eating in pot luck situations. I logically understand that restaurants can have germs and non-hand washers, but it does give me some peace of mind that they have reputations and health inspectors to deal with.
Anyone else?

We have potlucks all the time at my work. We have a HUGE one at Christmas time. It does not gross me out because I know all of the people that I work with, and have been to most of their houses so I trust their cooking and cleanliness. Plus at our potlucks the majority of food is snack stuff (chex mis, chips, dip, etc)

As for the restraunt thing really even though they have health inspectors that does not mean a thing, that means they are clean when the inspector is there and they clean when they think he might come. I worked in the restraunt business for 8 years at different places, and man people can be gross. I have HORROR stories from reputable places.

So your chances of eating potluck food that is not cleaned, or cooked in a sanitary place are just the same as eating out at a restraunt. Sorry!

i wont eat other peoples food either....totally agree with you...

If i know the people,i will eat thier food. If not no.
Like you say, you don`t know what is in thier food.

Well...I wouldnt say that I'm a germ a phobe...but it grosses me out when my in law washes her dishes...she just lets them soak all day...then just rinses them off when she gets home from work....she doesnt use a sponge or rag...we had dinner at my house the other night and she wanted to do the dishes...of course when she left, I had to redo them all, because I have to use soap and a sponge, or a rag...but I def agree with you...Pot Lucks are nasty...unless everyone buys it from a restaurant...take-out never hurt anyone...I dont think

i feel the same way too.... i work with the public doing manicures and somtime clients would walk in with their nails all dirty and stained from food or whatever.......and it just gross me out when i imagine them at home cooking dinner for their family with their nails all dirty and nasty looking.........

i try never to eat things people cook unless i really know them well.........i'm the same at home........very careful about everything i do since i have a son too..............there are so many cases of E. coli that it freak me out....
i dont trust resturants either, espeically fast food ones since its mostly managed by tennagers....they dont care about sanitation..........

Do you keep your pee in jars at your house? Must all visitors wear a surgical mask and booties?

As long as the food is held at appropriate temps (below 40 and above 160), you should be fine. Even if the cat did lick the potroast.

if you don't want to eat it don't
