For my Party Store Peeps, I have a fountian machine question?!

Question: I've got almost everything I need to build my own fountian machine except the carbonator, the syurp and the dispensing unit. The carbinator is my next big expence followed by the dispensing unit. my question is in the dispensing unit. in my research, they are called flow control valves. say I just wanted to make pop, nothing cosmetic, would a ball valve work instead of a hundred dollar flow control valve?
