What is the truth about bread?!


Question: on one site, theres a diet which allows you to eat as much bread (white) as you like, yet a site by the bbc says eating too much white bread expands your waist size.

so does anyone know the truth about white bread?
should it be eaten within moderation or as much as one likes??

White bread is the great satan. It's BLEACHED grain, which sucks all the nutrients out of it... and is hell on the digestion because as soon as it hits your stomach, it turns into the consistency of wallpaper paste or elmer's glue.

If there is a diet you can eat all the white bread you want let me know too!

All food should be eaten in moderation. These fad and crash diets will tell you to give everything up.

I don't eat white bread anymore because I wanted to increase the grains I ate - and I found that I don't gain weight the same as white bread, but I still like a slice on wonder here and there ;-)

i dont eat white bread anymore stopped ages ago so i guess the truth in my mind is its really not good

Anything should be eaten within moderation. Also, anything that is white or bleached is unhealthy for your digestive system. You should try to eat as many brown colored grains as possible. It is better for your digestive system, and healthier. White bread is also very high carbohydrates which will make you gain weight if not eaten in moderation.

Everything is ok in moderation babe. There's nothing that you can eat all you like.

No realistic diet allows you to eat as much of -anything- as one likes. It's really as simple as calories in versus calories out.

White bread presents a problem because it is metabolized very quickly, leaving the body hungry very quickly after eating. So, while not ideal, you can certainly still lose weight while consuming it in moderation.

The white bread diet you're talking about sounds like a scam/fad.

Bread (white or brown) contains a lot of calories. If you eat too much, you will put on weight.

Aim for a well balanced diet with a little of everything. If you are aiming to lose weight, the only reliable way is to use more calories than you eat. Either eat less or exercise more.

Some diets work by giving you a very unbalanced diet and upsetting your metabolism. Effectively you're making yourself ill so you lose weight. Don't go there.

Everyone is different. White bread is refined- meaning your body doesn't "work" to digest it so it just sits around. The yeast in all breads bothers most people. If you toast whole wheat bread it digests differently and you get more b-12.
I would NEVER eat white bread all the others are tastier and better for you. But still keep it to just 2 slices a day at most.

Don't listen to those lame diet sites advertising "eat all you want" of any item. Eating all you want of anything is bad for you.

The BBC is probably closer to getting it right, although overeating even wheat bread is not good.

Everything should be eaten in moderation. Carbs should count as roughly 60% of your caloric intake, though, and fats 30% (with no more than 10% saturated), protein 20%. A gram of carbohydrates has 4 calories, a gram of protein has 4 calories, and a gram of fat has 7 calories. And the food guide says to make at least half your grains whole. So while white bread doesn't make you fat, it's the mixture of the amount of white bread, plus the butter, mayo, olive oil, cheese, or whatever you put on it.

White bread has very little nutritional value and a high glycemic load. It contains almost no fiber, contains negligible amounts of vitamins and minerals (unless it's fortified) and its particular molecular structure makes it easy to metabolize and convert into sugar, causing your body to increase its insulin production to compensate, resulting in a 'crash' similar to that of eating something very sweet and crashing an hour later. Prolonged periods of this blood sugar surging and crashing can cause you to become insulin-resistant, a condition that contributes to weight gain and pre-diabetes.

I think white bread can be quite tasty, but I avoid it whenever possible. I'd rather eat whole-wheat bread, which has an average fiber content of 2-3g per slice, which helps you metabolize the stuff slower and hold on to the energy longer. Besides, any bread that has to be 'doctored' makes me suspicious. If you have to add stuff to it to make people buy it, that means it wasn't that great to begin with.

Don't do fad diets. The long-term results of every one of them is that you gain back twice as much in two years.

Whole grain is better than white (but I HATE whole grain bread myself).

Aim to lose no more than 4 pounds a month, by slowing decreasing the unhealthy food you eat, and move around more: dance, walk, bike, swim -- whatever you actually enjoy.

Eat a lot of healthy food.

Fad diets make everything worse, whether they "allow" you to eat a loaf a day, or none.
