What type of foods are GMO?!
Answers: I shop at Henry's marketplace and sometimes buy inorganic food such as green beans, potatoes, rice, and lentals. What type of foods are GMO? Is local grown food just grown with pesticides or do they GMO everything that isn't organic?
gmo stands for genetically modified organism... just because green beans are non-organic does not mean they've been genetically modified... i dont remember miracle-gro altering genetic patterns, or else we could all easily alter our DNA... seedless watermelons would be a good example of GMO, these have been genetically altered to not produce seeds
local grown means just that, it was grown locally, that doesnt mean it's organic or GMO, it only means it's grown locally
Well, I wish you would have informed us ignorants what GMO is.
The poster above me is right...locally grown (or even organic) does not mean that the veggie isn't genetically modified. It can actually be a little difficult to find fresh produce that has not been genetically modified. It is not pesticides or miracle grow that affects whether or not a product is genetically modified. It is to my understanding that such modifications usually happen to the seeds or whatever starters are used to grow the plant (the genetic makeup of the plant is altered in a lab...usually so that the plant looks nicer or stays ripe for a longer period of time). So, if you are buying packaged goods, pay close attention to the label for the no GMO symbol...any company that bothers to seek out ingredients that are not genetically modified will definitely print such information on the packaging. In terms of fresh produce, look for any labels on the veggies themselves...or on the little signs above/below them....odds are, any such produce will be in or near the organic section. Also, if you are determined to avoid GMOs, you might want to shop at health food stores (Market of Choice, etc.) since most normal grocery stores don't usually have much in the way of GMO free products (or some times even organic options).
