Yes. During the Civil War they were roasted & used to make a type of coffee, at least in the South.

Yes. We have some now in a bowl of mixed nuts(still in their shell). The acorns are my least favorite, taste dark and bitter. I would leave them to the little critters to eat! lol

Apparently so according to all these squirrels in my front yard!! It's like revenge of mother nature when the acorns from our big oak fall to the ground. We have so many little gray squirrels that feed in our yard. Even if humans could consume them, I don't think I would take the chance of getting between these squirrels and their acorns. Scary.
