Gingerbread house - need ideas for edible snow?!

Question: My children and I are making a gingerbread village scene. I need some ideas of what to put on the base that looks like snow yet is edible? I thought of powdered sugar but, that will be a mess and it will fly everywhere. Cotton candy is out because it would be quite expensive for the amount we would need. So, anyone have any cheap ideas for fake snow?
Thanks!

Marshmallows, marshmallow creme, confectioners icing, coconut, Almond Bark vanilla flavoured candy coating, white chocolate chips (melted or not), or fondant.

To make confectioners icing:
Cream:
1/2 C. vegetable shortening
1 tsp. vanilla
Add:
2 C. confectioners (powdered) sugar
Mix well.
Add:
More sugar, 1/2 C. at a time, until desired sweetness and consistency are reached.

This holds up well, can be tinted and is edible.

chop up some marshmallows??

Have you considered white icing as snow. You can make it as thin or as thick as you like. And it spreads too.

Coconut

Try Chedder popcorn.

Shredded Coconut!!! Yummy!! Or Fluff, like the stuff you make peanut butter and fluff sandwiches with.

use white icing with clear sprinkles over top i have done it & its very pretty

Cream cheese icing? It's white. Also coconut isn't such a bad idea either. The powdered sugar idea is a good one, but like you said it would get everywhere.

Coconut flakes

Coconut

Bobi's suggestions are right on target. Just make sure you don't use anything that must be kept refrigerated such as cream cheese frosting. It would spoil unless you kept the gingerbread house in your fridge!

I found a good site,here it is...

..you should check it out.

Use a thin layer of white frosting, and then sprinkle with coconut. The frosting will allow the coconut to adhere to the cake and not fall off as easy.

Cooked, candid white rice.

Mashed potato flakes.

If you can keep cold until the last minute, you can also use whippped whipping cream.

If you know of a white colored hard candy, you could also use that. Just toss them in the food processor to crush.

Also if you know of a 'white' cereal, that would also work.

-coconut
-big sugar crystals on top of icing
-marshmallow fluff OR marshmallows with icing on top
-whipped cream?
powdered sugar is good for the tops of houses, but not for the base
hope this helps!
