Pumpernickel is a type of German bread traditionally made with rye meal. It is now often made with a combination of rye flour and whole rye berries.

No answer here - but take a look in Wikipedia, where there is an excellent (but long) explanation of pumpernickel - its origins, ingredients, variants, and more

A really lovely, dark rye bread, and it makes the best rueben sandwiches ever.
