The taste of truffles?!
Answers: Can anyone please describe the taste of Truffles. I know they are expensive to buy but wonder if they are worth the price.
I am a former chef and I have used both the black ones from France, Italy and Oregon in the US, I have used fresh white ones from Italy along with the paste, the black type from France come whole, peelings and paste.
Worth the cost, like the one lady said truffle oil will give you a hint into there flavour, and if you are happy with it, then try the other types.
If you in the US a nice type is the one's from Oregon and they are available on the net, there is a gourmet on-line food company that reputedly has some from China.
I use them in sauce, the white in risottos, pate's, as garnish for dishes and as a flavour for oils and sauce bases. I would be very careful and not spend a lot on your first attempt, if pleased then see if the next step it o.k for you, I have 2 black Italian ones here at home now, I paid $20 for them last year.
The rum ones from Asda are delicious! Only 55p lol
They taste like musty old socks and not worth a penny.
they are wonderful!!!! to me it tastes like soft smooth chocolate..i love em....had some yesterday
Yum!
i like the plain chocolate ones. they are okay but they are mostly all fancy with different fruit flavors i.e. coconut, cherry, if you like those flavors, by all means go and buy some!!!
i dont think there worth the price
i havent tasted them
i saw them at the food channel even the cook made a
ugly face when he was told of the price.
if you got the money just buy them that way you wont regret not tasting them :)
If you're talking about the mushroom, it taste woody and smells buttery.
Buy truffle oil, which is cheaper, to try out the flavour.
Personally, I think it's lovely... :-)
Hi it all depends where you get them from, and what flavour,
They taste lovely if there just chocolate but some are fruit or rum flavoured,
The ones I get are cheap ones that are like 99p from wilkinsons, supermarkets, they have flakes of chocolate on there out side and smooth cool creamy chocolate on the inside when it melts, Yummy, but you cannot stop eating them and then they make you feel sick lol
They have a woody to nutty flavor to them. If you enjoy flavors of different sorts of mushrooms than I recommend trying out a truffle.
Here is a little bit more info along with some recipes to try: http://www.mykoweb.com/cookbook/truffles...
Some people are talking about Chocolate Truffles, but I believe the asker is asking about mushroom truffles...please clarify so you get better answers!
I've only ever had truffle oil, and maybe some truffle shavings in a dish, so I don't know if they're worth the money or not.
I guess it depends on what kind of truffles your asking about. Chocolate kind or Mushroom kind. Please clarify.
Well, we all have our own taste buds but I think they're pretty good, they're actually better when you make them. (there's a lot of recipes but here's one that only requires two ingredients)
1 cup of chocolate chips
3/4 cup of cream
*melt them both in a pot on the stove
*beat with an electric beater until fluffy
*put them in the fridge or outside until they harden a little
*roll them into balls or whatever you want
usually makes around 20
The chocolate ones?
Rich, creamy and delicious!
The fungi tuber ones?
So many types and rare that 2 people ever agree! Check;

Note- Truffle oil actually has artificial flavouring! Who knew?
They're definitely worth the price. Creamy and decadent! You should try making your own, there are tonnes of truffle recipes out there that are to die for.

They smell and taste like the place they are dug from, I am trying to teach my terrier to locate them in the local forest and at just under 1000 euros a kilogramme for the black variety she had better learn pretty quick
