Are "turkey hot dogs" wrapped in intestine?!
Answers: I bought some "Jennie O" brand turkey dogs. My friend says they are wrapped in intestines. Is that true? ew.
I am a former chef and all processed frankfurters are made in the factory with a collegen or plastic casing, there are some european style weiners and smoked sausage that might have a natural casing, but the chicken, turkey and tofu hotdogs are free of animal casings, they make them up, pre-cook and smoke them in the factory and the casings are removed.
I have had tours through 3 meat processing palnts and seen them done, here in Canada, Maple Leaf, Scheinders and a local one, and have eaten a chcicken weiner her for the less fat content for years, even Butterball turkey franks.
No. Not Jennie O and Turkey dogs as far as I know will never be wrapped in pork, lamb, or beef intestine in a commercial grade since the turkey dog's biggest buyer is the no red meat eater and health interest people. The skin is one made of vegetable proteins and cellulose.
Agreed with the 1st poster---although careful if you are buying Jennie-O turkey sausages, which I believe do come in a pork casing.
Just check the package and see if it says "natural casing". If it does have natural casing, then yes it is intestine.
