Eating Chalk?!

Question: I just learned today my friend regularly eats chalk. He is originally from Mexico, and he says when he lived there, his mother gave him and his siblings a substance similar to chalk that they marketed to increase calcium levels. Now, since he moved to the United States, he has been eating the blackborad chalk on our lecture halls, and I think that is a little strange. I was just curious if others use chalk in this way, or if they have that custom in their own families.

Well it just might be that he has developed a habit my old math teacher did it all the time, years ago. -. However, more likely his body is craving calcium. He needs to see a doctor and be tested for calcium deficiency. He may need an adjustment in his diet or medication.

Thank you for trying to help your friend. You are obviously a caring person. Have a very Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year. Report It

An abnormal craving to eat substances which are not normally consumed by humans is called Pica. Chalk is not harmful in the sense that it can poison you. Because of it's consistency, however residue is easily ingested into the lungs and could possibly cause pulmonary distress. A person who finds themselves wanting to ingest such things as chalk, talcum powder, etc. is suffering from a mineral deficiency. They should have a complete medical evaluation.

eating chalk is a sign of iron deficiency

Hmm. That's interesting. Being Mexican I vaguely remember eating a candy that was similar to chalk, it look liked the candy cigarettes but without the paper wrapper. We would joke around saying it was chalk but it really wasn't. Maybe he's confused and thinks he was eating actual chalk as a child?

    ewwwwwww...eating chalk?!?! blech!
