What is the best way to sharpen your kitchen knives?!

Question: First thing you need is a knife that is good enough it will sharpen.

Second you need a whet stone, with at least two sides one coarse and one fine.

Then read here on how to use the whet stone.

You will need a steel to keep the edge sharp. A steel will not sharpen a dull edge, it just will keep an edge straight so it is sharp.

OR you could do what I do and take them to a knife shop and have them hand honed. I am not crazy about knife sharpeners and NEVER let anyone take a good knife to a grind stone.

There is no substitute for a professional knife sharpener, but they are hard to find today. Possibly if you have a friend in a meat market, he could have them done for you...if not, there are sharpening tools available at kitchen supply stores that do a fair job.

Use a Gatco professional knife sharpener and then a professional steel to keep them sharp. NEVER put the knives in the dishwasher.
