Can anyone tell me if it totally necessary ...............?!
I have a mountain of them to do for a huge Christmas Party Dinner, and am looking to save time.
Is there any easier way - before anyone say its, I PREFER FRESH to frozen ta.
Answers: To cut the cross in the bottom of a brussel sprout after taking the outer leaves, prior to cooking.

I can save you time.
Don't bother cutting a cross on your brussels.
I'm a vegetarian, and have been for 22 years.
So as you can imagine I have gone through plenty of brussel sprouts, and cross cutting the sprouts doesn't really make any difference, they will cook and taste the same.
Have a lovely dinner party and have a
very Merry Christmas.
If they are organic, then just rinse them through and chuck em in is what i say!! No need to cut that cross in them either, according to Gordon!!
You dont have to but the reason for it is so they cook quicker and right through to the middle. So if you want the perfect lunch, then you gotta get the knife out. Or... if you have guests say 'oh do come and peel the sprouts whilst you chat to me'
I don't know the answer sorry but I'd just like to say you'd definitely win the prize for the best question of the night. :)
Apparently it isn't necessary - just a tradition that's been handed down. Why don't you just quickly stab the bottom if you feel that maybe they won't cook properly if you leave out the cross. That's what I'd do.
You will find that by cutting the hard stalk it will improve the cooking time and make the sprout more tender. That part is quite hard and you could end up with near raw sprouts even after a long period of cooking. It's a fussy, labour intensive vegetable to cook, but if you like them, it is worth it.
I never do it. I cut the large ones in half though....
My mother never did, but I would imagine that the cutting of the X would only take a few extra seconds. It might have something to do with making sure the center cooks thoroughly or something. Personally I hate those little brains, so I don't eat them, let alone cook 'em!
According to this web site, the X is made so that the stems will cook faster.

ABSOLUTELY NOT AS THEY CAN
ABSORB TOO MUCH WATER AND
BECOME SOGGY.
No. Just cook them 10-15 minutes longer.
No, it's not.
It's all a farce .
I think it came from the hundred year war!!!
Get that knife and start crossing...........
