What is in gum that makes it so chewy and enjoyable?!

Question: I was born in 1960 and when I was in elementary school, if we were caught chewing gum, we had to turn in a report on "chicle" which was, at the time, the primary ingredient which makes gum "chewy." The chewing gum "Chiclets" gets it name from "chicle." It's a natural product from a tree and I've never forgotten the lesson I had to learn.

I've linked you to the Wiki page on "chicle", below.

Chicle was, at one time, used by Wrigley's to make gum, but like most foodstuffs and beverages created decades ago, synthetic ingredients have long since been developed and often replace the natural products which created or resulted in the recipe in the first place. For instance, did you know that gum is now, for all intents and purposes, made from synthetic rubber?
