I guess it is because people build up a bond with their pets, giving them personalities and forming attachments. This makes the idea of eating them incomprehensible, however, the likelihood of other animals not having these same qualities is low. People tend to think of the animals they eat in a different manner to those they own. BTW, my answer to both of these questions is no.

If i was stuck in snow in my cabin house in upstate new york and I wouldn't eat my pet. If my pet was hungry, he would prolly eat me, and wouldn't notice it before he eats me whole.

no way that is a sick question!!! who in their right mind would eat there own pet? if someone answers yes to this question, THEY SHOULDNT BE ALLOWED TO OWN A PET. i would so much rather starve to death than eat my adorable little dog. thats sick to even think about.
Hookay... we did eat our neighbors dog once, so help me it was tasty.
And our neighbor was totally okay with it, he was the one who butchered it and cooked it.
I would just like to point out that eating dogs is (or was) considered normal where I come from.
I found nothing wrong with the meal.
And again it was tasty. Not delicious, the meat was a bit tough but otherwise, yeah it was tasty.

i DON'T THINK THAT IT'S THE SAME THING. A PET IS SOMETHING THAT YOU LOVE AND RETURNS THAT LOVE. I DON'T THINK THAT A SANE HUMAN COULD STOMACH TO EAT SOMETHING THAT IT LOVES. WELL NOT LITERALLY. : )
