What was is on an original Rubin Sandwich?!
Answers: We used to always make Rubin Sandwiches at home in Illinois Which was always made like a grilled cheese sandwich always using Rie Bread with Swiss Cheese, Sour Krout, and Corned Beef. I was at a theme park overseas and they had them suposedly New york style with Ranch dressing instead of Sour Krout and some other kind of cheese that was melted but the bread not grilled. Which is really a Rubin?
Here's an entire article on it's origins:
Grilled Reuben or Rubin, Reubin Sandwich
Each Sandwich
1 tablespoon Sauerkraut, can
Softened butter for spreading
1 tablespoon Thousand Island Salad Dressing
2 slices Caraway seed Rye Bread
Thin sliced Corned Beef sandwich meat
1 slice Swiss Cheese
Optional; 1 medium thick slice of cooked Turkey Breast.
If it had ranch dressing or any cheese other than Swiss, it was not a Reuben. (I've never heard of a Rubin.) Reuben is Rye bread, Corned beef, Swiss cheese, Sauerkraut and either Thousand Island dressing or a deli style or German mustard. Personally I prefer the mustard over the Thousand Island. Some people will use turkey in place of the corned beef, but my opinion is that a turkey Reuben is as much a Reuben as turkey bacon is bacon. Which is not at all.
A friend once took me to an "authentic" diner that made "The best" Reubens anywhere....well, so they said, and I thought it was quite revolting.
