Re-freezing fish?!
Answers: sometimes when I buy fish it has come to the grocery store frozen and then thawed out to sell. Is it okay to freeze the again when I get home?
It's a myth.
It's safe to refreeze and freeze and thaw and freeze again.
It's an absolute myth. This myth was populated by the original meat sellers when home refrigeration/freezing became possible.
Their thinking was, that if refreezing was available, people wouldn't buy meat as often. So, to cultivate this myth, they put the label "do not refreeze" on the sticker that held the package together.
It's stuck. As long as you kept it reasonably refrigerated or if it was partially unthawed, it's safe to refreeze at any time.
Just be aware you might get larger "ice crystals" in the meat and to completely unthaw once you're certain you're going to cook it.
Yes. When the market thaws it out, they usually thaw it in the refrigerator, which is very safe because it never reaches a temperature at which pathogenic bacteria can grow. The reason why re-freezing can be dangerous is because most people let the food go above 41 degrees F when they thaw it out. This can lead to a some pathogenic bacteria growth. If you refreeze it, the bacteria don't die. If you thaw it out again and again and again, each time letting it exceed 41 degrees F, then the number of bacteria can increase, making it dangerous to eat. But, if you only thaw food in your refrigerator (41 degrees or less), you can actually re-freeze it as many times as you want.
That's from a food safety standpoint. In terms of freshness and flavor, no you shouldn't refreeze it.
I think that you can only freeze it once and if they already froze and thawed it then you can't refreeze it. I know this because when my mom would go shopping for meat she wouldn't get the thawed ones, she'd say "that's already been frozen."
no please don't i don't know of any meat that can thaw out and refreeze throw it out not worth the risk x-mas is right around the corner and we don't need you to be in the hospital
No, you should not freeze it again. You should never refreeze fish.
I am not sure, I usually eat the fish right after I get it. It is quite tasty. Except sometimes this hobo named Bob steals it and runs away with it while I am eating on my bench. I think this is very rude! I do not like that man
No, I would not reccomend it. You see, They usually freeze fish on the boat when it is caught and then when it gets to the plant they thaw it, butcher it and then freeze it again.
If your grocery store is thawing it and selling it to you, You are not getting very good product. My reccomendation is to find your local fresh fish house and buy there. Most fresh houses only keep their fish on ice. Although with the Food TV craze that is going on right now most grocers are carrying a better selection of fish.
Yes, only once.
