Which is the most common food item the world over?!
Vegetables are a second type of plant matter eaten as food. These include root vegetables (such as potatoes and carrots), leaf vegetables (such as spinach and lettuce), stem vegetables (such as bamboo shoots and asparagus), and inflorescence vegetables (such as globe artichokes and broccoli). Many herbs and spices are highly-flavorful vegetables.
Answers: The majority of all foods consumed by human beings are seeds. These include cereals (such as maize, wheat, and rice), legumes (such as beans, peas, and lentils), and nuts. Oilseeds are often pressed to produce rich oils, including sunflower, rape (including canola oil), and sesame. Fruits are the ripened extensions of plants, including the seeds within.

rice - if you look at the production every year
I don't know for sure, but I think the most consumed fruit in the world is the mango. As for the most common general food item... I'd have to say rice.
My guess would be rice
I will have to say tomato...
Rice even tho i dont like it unless its fried rice.
bread...?
Probably bread in many diverse forms.
The americans and europeans eat the bread as you we know it, the Mexicans have their soft tortilla bread, the middle easterns pita bread, the Chinese eat their bao tzi's and Indians have their naans and roti.
Potato or bread
everybody uses it in cooking
the world over............. butter
you sure about rice? what about corn and soy?
EDIT: just checked wikipedia. gotta be careful over there. the text states maize is the most abundant by weight (no source), but comparing the "top producers" tables (according to the UN food & agriculture reports) shows rice with a slight lead. still, the values are for different years. it looks like maize and rice are pretty neck-and-neck at about 700 million metric tons.
wheat ~ 625 mil
soy ~ 200 mil
potato ~ 300 mil
sugar beet ~ 250 mil

p.s. most rice prob gets eaten as rice, whereas most maize gets eaten as animal feed or corn syrup.
this would be iether rice or potatoes. both are staples that are inexpensive and mass produced. I know potatoes are in many parts of the world like india russia europe. rice moreso in china and the middle east.
chips ,junk food ,hamburgers,hot dogs,
mangoes can be grown anywhere. however coca-cola is by far the most common "food" item. it is the second most most recognised word in the world after OK.
you could also debate coffee is common as it is the 4th highest traded commodity and 2nd highest traded legal commodity behind petrol. however it's not grown everywhere and a lot countries who do grow it don't drink it as it is financially more beneficial (sorta) to sell it.
it may be potatoes.
most western countries do not take rice much, whereas both asian and western countries consume more potatoes. so i feel that majority of people in the world feed on potatoes more and it has become a common food for everyone.
