Another question for meat eaters: what is the point of the "mmmm" joke?!

Question: As a vegan, I have occasionally had the experience of meat eaters going out of their way to let me know that they find meat delicious. Often, it is a comment as simple as, "Mmmm...chicken filet." I am talking about times when this is obviously directed at my veganism, not simple discussion of favorite foods. Are you familiar with this type of humor? Is the meat eater trying to disgust me by mentioning a food I don't like, or is s/he trying to tempt my tastebuds by mentioning a food s/he believes I secretly do like?

It sounds more like they're trying to be rude. If they're going out of their way to make the comment, maybe they think it's funny to make this kind of "dig" at your vegan lifestyle because they lack a true sense of humor and have to resort to such tactics. Or it could be that they simply lack social skills. But either way, it's rude.

As for what it means, they're trying to disgust you and/or belittle your choices. If you offer a dieter a piece of chocolate, that would be a deliberate attempt to tempt them from their path (because it's something the dieter would normally eat but is trying to stay away from). But to offer someone something they don't eat due to their chosen lifestyle and beliefs (or spiritual path); it sounds to me like they're belittling your choices.

No, the point of saying "mmmmmm" is akin to offering a dieter chocolate.

  • Its called humour and some way along your life you may develope it!

I'm not sure. Are vegans allowed to eat animal crackers????

Could be a bit of both.

    ummmmmmmmm do not know

I do that with really disgusting foods. Like when I make "bargain dip" out of any and all condiment packets I can find and dip chips in it. Or when I made Thai Coconut Soup out of melted Edy's fruit bars with wolf chili in it.

meat is good. They are just trying to make you eat some of that meat. + meat is goood . Why dont u try it

As someone who has done this - trying to disgust the vegan/vegetarian. Just an attempt at humor, satire, sarcasm.........

yes. I was a vegetarian for years and now I would like to return to myways but husband was a former chef and anytime salami or proscuitto or steak is talked about and i cringe he just goes "Mmmmmm"

they are trying to get you goat. Anyway, vegans are phonies.
plants, animals all have chemicals in them unless you buy freerange or organic.

cows have no more right to life than a stalk of corn. If you can tell me why a cow has more of a right, let me know.

If carrots had mouths, would they scream when you pulled them out of the ground and started eating them alive?

I believe it has a lot to do with the thought of how could you not like this......?and a little about making you uncomfortable and disgusted with it. Next time go Mmmm green beans or what ever veggie you like best or they like worst.. dont show that it bothers you.

The meat eater is merely trying to say 'MEAT GOOD' but obviously cant get his words out because his mouth is full of lovely bubbly meat

offbeat humor. stop being so damn sensitive

They are probably trying to upset you or taunt you for your lifestyle choice. It is very juvenile if you ask me.
