What is a true american food besides hamburgers?!
Answers: everytime i try to think of American foods they end up ethnic or atleast coming from another country. like spaghetti's originally from Italy, and tacos although are Americanized they are originated from Mexico..so what are our American foods?
Potato Chips.
Created in 1853 at the Moon Lake Resort n Saratoga Springs, NY. When a customer complained the french fries that were served were too thick, a second batch of trimmed fries was sent out. When this didn't please the customer, Chef George Crum (of partial Native Amercan ancestry) sent out too thin to be eaten with a fork. The customer enjoyed them and the potato chip was born.
Cranberry Sauce.
Cranberries are native to North Amerca. Native Ameriicans made a sauce with the to accompany venison, turkey and other meats.
Toll House Cookies.
1930, Ruth Wakefield, owner of the Toll House Inn was mixing a batch of cookies for her guests when she discovered that she was out of baker’s chocolate. She substituted broken pieces of semi-sweet chocolate. The chocolate chip cookie became the most popular variety of cookie in America, a distinction it still holds to this day.

Franks and Beans. The original American food of the Old West.
Some 'true' American foods are Southern fried chicken, hot dogs, Italian beef sandwiches, apple, cherry, berry and pumpkin pies, baked or fried pork chops, corn dogs, fried dough, funnel cake, corn on the cob, corn bread...
Ask the Indians? Then this guy from Italy who drove his boat over here with his spices and beans. Then we kind of made them better. Then the lady who picked the apples and made some apple pie thing. Then when the Pilgrims arrived they made some stuffing and Turkeys with the Natives. You can go on and on. How About Rockey Mountain Oysters ever hear of those?
Many foods people think of as 'American' have origins coming from other cultures throughout time. People were putting meat between 2 slices of bread long before they became sandwiches or hamburgers. Cakes, pies and pastries have their roots in Europe brought over by settlers and immigrants throughout the years.
Even the noodles in Spagetti have more of a history in China (where they were discovered by Spanish Expolorers) than in Italy.
Unless it's truly Native American fare made with local ingredients like corn, squash, buffalo, venison, fish etc it's almost impossible to call something wholly American -
OK - that icky green bean cassorole only seems known to Americans I think!
I'm just glad we have access to all of it!
Navajo Fry Bread
pizza
Hotwings
Creole and Cajun cooking, maple syrup, Philly cheese steak, corn on the cob, Caesar salad, Dungeness crab Louie, New England clambake, hero or grinder sandwich, the list goes on.
Hodogs, fried chicken, steak, ribs, pork, corn, potatoes .......
Hamburger? Even ancient Romans were doing it: you can still see the tools they used, if you visit a city like Pompeii...
I think Kellogg did invented the only true American (not native) food...
In the case of the foods you have mentioned, I think that Americans have modified them from their original forms, so that they are now American. But anyway, cajun cooking is America, as well as barbeque.
