What did people do before the oven was invented?!

Question: Cook over open fire to make their meals? Or what?

Answers: Cook over open fire to make their meals? Or what?

Ovens aren't exactly a recent invention. Electric or Gas ovens, yes but people have been using ovens for centuries.

Pit ovens would've been used by any primitive type people over the centuries. Dig a hole, line it with rocks and build a big fire in the bottom of it. This heats up the rocks, remove the fire, put in the food and cover with dirt.

Then there are the ovens that were built into the wall of rock buildings with a place for fire underneath. I don't know what they're called but they've been used for a really long time too.

Finally people built cast iron stoves complete with ovens and a stovetop. It was all heated with fire. Any of these required a lot more practice to use well than our modern ovens because anytime you use fire the temperature varies depending on what type of wood you have. Those that were use to them cooked very well with them.

BINGO!!!!!!

They made do with whatever they had- I don't have an oven at my cabin- and have a grill in the fireplace to cook on. I make some of my bes meals there- steaks, baked potatoes, corn, you can adapt just about anything to make over a fire, and the ambiance is fantastic!

Cook in cast iron stoves .

Cook over a fireplace

don't know, I was'nt born yet? maybe they built a fire?

Fire!

Some food we cook nowadays they probably would have eaten raw.

By kettle or on a spit over an open fire. Also, smoking and curing were very popular ways of preparing meats.

They spent a lot more time cooking.

Yes!!!!!!!!

cook over fire or 1)heat rocks until really hot, 2)bury them deep in the sand or dirt, 3)cover the food in leaves and bark, 4)bury the food in the rock pit. the rocks would cook the food in this very primitive oven. people still do this today (in hawaii for example)
