I am from texas and my husband is from Michigan.. he never heard of black eyed peas being eaten on new years d!
Answers: so where did this concept come from ? How did it startand what does it mean and is it just a southern tradition only?
It is a tradition exclusively to the American South, it brings good luck to you. This tradition dates back to the civil war. I've added the wiki link for you to share with your hubby. I am from Michigan as well and never heard of this until my Southern mother in law brought it to my attention. They are delicious and a yummy tradition! Also for the other answers Michiganders are proud they say pop, at least this one is!
idk
yankee's don't know nothin about that.... black eyed peas for health and cabbage for money...
Guess what, i never heard of it either.
yeah, but i bet he calls soft drinks "pop"
I don't know where it came from but I have lived in Texas my whole life and that has always been the tradition(in our home).
Here's one theory
Mind you I have never had a black eyed pea in my life (california girl)

i never heard of it im of wisconsin ,i guess its a tradation in the south, since the salves made the food, in the day so may be thats where it came from.
It is a Southern tradition!! It is for good luck in the coming year. As is eating greens for prosperity in the coming year. I haven't done any research into these traditions, but in the "Old Virginia" cookbook, these and more are mentioned.
I've never heard of it either, I've heard of cooking a silver dollar in cabbage. It's suppose to bring you good fortune for the new yr.:)
btw. I live in Tx
Southern tradition only. Up here in the north we do the cabbage thing.
