American Chocolate?!
Answers: Why is American Chocolate so different in taste to the one we have in Europe. I mean why does american chocolate tastes like a soap? Or is it just me not being used to the quality of American Chocolate?
Being from Canada, I noticed this difference too.
The difference is due to an increased amount of Carnauba Wax and less sugar in their chocolate.
Sugar is more expensive in the US as it isn't a common commodity. Unlike in Canada, where sugar is produced and refined very close to Coca Cola and candy companies.
Also, in Europe, consumers tend not to be stingy about paying extra money for good quality chocolate.
I think it's due to the fact you're accustomed to the taste of European chocolate. I think American and European chocolate differ in the fact that the sugar content of chocolate in Europe is less; Americans like myself tend to prefer chocolate being sweeter. However, I love all types of chocolate-including European!
By the way, what country do you live in? And what's your favorite chocolate bar?
I'm canadian and have noticed this as well, American chocolate seems to have less cocoa solids, and that waxy or rubbery consistency which is not my thing - to me also seems too sweet, but I'm a dark chocolate lover. In fact, I just love chocolate and am getting fussier about it all the time. As a kid any old chocolate bar at the corner store would do.... now if I'm given just a regular box of chocolates (popular name brand) I'd rather just re-gift it. I crave only the best high quality chocolate, and the darker and lower sugar the better ! :)
I think taste for chocolate probably has a life cycle such as this for everyone, and we're all at different ages and stages. Who knows !
The Swiss and some French and German chocolates are exceptional. However I have tasted some Russian chocolate.............brr blah.
perhaps they have improved it by now.
Some of our USA chocolate is exceptionally good, have you visited the Godiva Chocolatier ? Delicious, and not overly sweet. It is of excellent quality.
There are other brands more reasonably priced , but not exceptional in taste
Indeed you may have been used to a better quality European Chocolate and find many inferior brands in the USA as well as Europe. Price makes a lot of difference in taste The chocolate in the USA is being improved. many Brands are coming out with Dark chocolate, ( good for your Heart)? that is better tasting and indeed trying different chocolates will bring better results anywhere Happy New Year
hershey has the taste of sour milk added because that is how many people remember the taste of hershey's chocolate. it was because milk was harder to keep fresh in the old days.
today, hershey actually adds a sour milk flavor to their chocolate.
American dark chocolate does not have to contain as much cacao solid as European chocolate to be allowed to be called 'dark chocolate'. It is the same for milk chocolate.
In cheaper American chocolate, polyglycerol polyricinoleate is used to maintain the same mouth feel, while reducing the amount of cacao butter (which is an expensive ingredient). For the connaisseur it is noticeable.
