this is kind of gross, but I spent most of my morning yesterday cleaning my cupboards because a small can of sauerkraut that had been conitnuously pushed farther and farther back in the cupboard exploded. The smell was horrible. I suspect this can was at least six years old because I craved and ate sauerkraut only when I was preganant with my first child and she turned 6 in November! Gross! The smell finally came out with a seriously strong dose of Simple Green.

I don't keep any food item that is old. I regularly check dates on anything I buy. If there's no date and it's not something I KNOW I recently purchased, it gets tossed! I don't buy prepared foods, so it's only the cans for making sauces, tuna, crabmeat and the like, that I need to keep an eye on. Condiments are used up in reasonable time periods. I purchase pastas, but never much at a time, and they go immediately out of the boxes into other containers, but I know how old they are.

The syrup is long gone, but I refill the bottle with a cheaper store brand of buttery syrup.
I had to replace the metal cap with a plastic cap, as the metal one started to show signs of wear.
Only my husband and I (and you) know the truth.
