Is there a substitute for nutmeg?!

Question: I'm trying to make a cranberry-apple cake but the recipe requires nutmeg and I don't have any. So is there any substitute for it?

Cinnamon is similar, but your recipe probably calls for that too.

Just omit the nutmeg and add it next time.

nutmeg as in soccer?

my names not meg

If the cake calls for other spices (cinnamon, allspice, cardamom, cloves) you can probably get away w/ leaving it out.

If it doesn't, cinnamon would be nice w/ the apples in any case.

my wife says cinnamon will be OK- especially for the kind of cake you are making.

Cinnamon ?
All spice ?

Just ideas

cardamom

Nope! You might try a little cinnamon for a different taste, but nutmeg is nutmeg ... no substitute will work.

You can try cardamom

pumpkin-pie spice, ginger, and cinnamon are good spices in sweet treats!

Should be fine without it, but if you're worried, add a pinch more cinnamon

Cinnamon or Cloves, Cardamom, Mace (yes, there is a spice called mace)

The best substitute for nutmeg is cardamom but you also can use ground cinnamon, ginger, mace, allspice or cloves, starting with half the amount specified and adding more to taste.

Cardamom http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calabash_nu...

try all-spice

do you have pumpkin pie spice, it has a lot of nutmeg in it.

I would use pumpkin pie spice or allspice

How about allspice? Do you have any of that? It's like nutmeg and cloves and goes good in cakes.

A lot of people said try cardamom instead. I'd go for cinnamon, but if you DO use cardamom, use A LITTLE BIT. It has a much stronger flavor than nutmeg.
