Fruit in tins in their natural juices...do they contain the same vitamins and goodness as fresh fruit?!


Question: We all assume that fresh is best, but 'fresh' bought in a shop is often not fresh at all! According to the British Nutrition Foundation, broadly speaking, the vitamin and mineral content of frozen and canned fruit and vegetables is equivalent to that of fresh products. Fruit and veg are usually frozen or canned very soon after harvesting, so the vitamin and mineral content is often preserved. Canned fruit may also be a good source of fibre, although I believe this is where it may fall down when compared with fresh fruit. Some losses of vitamin C probably occur during the canning process, but the levels will then remain constant throughout the shelf life of the product. A portion of canned fruit will still count towards your 'Five A Day', and canned in juice, rather than syrup.

Not all canned fruit is in syrup. But the ones that are with their natural juices do not contain their full value of vitamins and goodness that you're thinking of. Fresh is the best way to go if you can do that.

They do not have all of the vitamins nor health benefits of fresh fruit.

Fruit and veg in tins is said to be more nutritious than frozen as nothing has been taken away from them. I always eat fresh fruit as they are generally more crispy (apples, plums) and the rest have more bite to them (pineapple, peaches) See tin for "use by date" and you will get the full vitamins

Yes they are just as nutritious as fresh fruit and still count as one of your five a day. Just be careful to get the ones in fruit juice rather than syrup. Enjoy your tinned fruit!

no,the canning possess needs heat which means most things in tins are cooked,fruit included.Many vitamins are destroyed in this proses,vitamin c is also water soluble,which means that if the fruit is washed prior to canning there maybe losses.fresh foods are always better.You may find that certain vits. and minerals are added to counter some of the losses,from processing
