Answers: i am an american living in austraila now.some of you already know this.this question is for austrailans only unless there are some americans here in AU that have the answer.we have a tradition in america on new years day. we cook a small pan of black eyed peas in bacon, onion, salt, pepper and what ever else you like to spice it up and eat them on new years day. this in turn is supposed to bring prosperty and good luck to your family as long as everyone in the house hold eats at least 1 spoonfull of black eyed peas. i cant find any and am in a panic.coles and woolworths dont carry them any more.does any one know where i can get hold of at least 1-2 cans?they are similer to baked beans(texture wise) but are only half the size with a black dot on one end...please help .. im located in NSW central coast...thanks in advance and happy new year.cheers

Look up cowpeas or ask your grocer- they are the same thing, and actually are imported from Australia to the US so you should have no problem finding dried ones. Here is a recipe for starting off with dried peas:
Hoppin' John Recipe
2 cups dried black-eyed peas
Cold water
1 pound lean slab bacon or 1 pound meaty ham hocks
1 large onion, chopped
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
4 cups water or chicken broth
2 cups uncooked long-grain white rice
Salt and black pepper to taste
Before preparing dried beans, sort through them thoroughly for tiny pebbles or other debris. Soak, rinse, and drain dried black-eyed peas. Place black-eyed peas in a large soup pot over medium-high heat and cover with cold water; bring to a boil. Remove from heat; cover and let stand 1 to 2 hours. Drain and rinse beans.
Using the same large soup pot, over medium-high heat, add soaked black-eyed peas, bacon or ham hock, onion, and red pepper. Add water or chicken broth; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook for 1 1/2 to 2 hours or until the peas are tender (do not boil as the beans will burst).
Remove bacon or ham hock and cut into bite-size pieces. Return meat to pot. Stir in rice, cover, and cook 20 to 25 minutes or until rice is tender and liquid is absorbed. Remove from heat and season to taste with salt and pepper.
Makes 8 servings.

Hey there, i know there are shops that specifically stock only usa foods. check out http://www.usafoods.com.au/ this store is located in melbourne but if u contact them they may be able to point you in a direction in NSW or deliver to you. Good luck.
Sorry, I don't currently live in Australia, but I did live there for a while a few years back, and often had the problem of not finding the foods I was used to, which can be made more difficult by the names of everything there being different.
Try finding out there is an alternative name for black eyed peas used there, it is a member of the cowpea family if that helps. If there aren't canned peas, try finding dried black eyed peas and cooking them up the old fashioned way. You might even be able to find them in an asian market type store if they aren't in the main grocery chains.
Since you can't find them canned, try finding them dried. Good luck, and if you can't find any black eyed peas, I'd say start a new tradition of eating Tim Tams for good luck on new years. They definitely taste better.
