My family always makes me eat black eyed peas and cabage. I found this is why.....

Black-eyed peas & cabbage. Some say the black-eyed pea's lucky streak dates back to the pharaohs. Others say it started in Vicksburg, Virginia, during the Civil War when the town ran out of food while under siege and the inhabitants were lucky enough to discover cow peas (a.k.a., black-eyed peas). Meanwhile, cabbage leaves (a symbol of prosperity) are thought to bring prosperity to those who eat them on New Year's Day.

There are many superstitions for the ushering in of the New Year. There are a lot of them and some I had never heard of but made sense. I enjoyed reading this.

As for a menu, it is considered good luck in the Southern U.S. to have ham hocks, green and black eyed peas. The peas and greens denote prosperity for the coming year. The peas are the coins and the greens are the folding money. It is considered bad luck to eat chicken or any fowl on new year's day. A chicken scratches backward. Eating chicken will be scratching to make a living the next year.

Happy New Year!!

we wear red on new years eve/new years day.. they say its so that money would flow into your life thru out the new year.
maybe you can wear something red while cooking your fish/cabbage and greens lol..
