Evil Onions!?!

Question: How can you prevent your eyes from stinging when chopping onions?

Answers: How can you prevent your eyes from stinging when chopping onions?

First of all...use a sharp blade. The sharper the better, because it won't crush as many cells in the onion. Cut onions next to a lit candle. The heat from the candle helps disperse the sulfenic acid fumes (syn-propanethial-S-oxide) ...and it won't sting nearly as bad.

This is why cooked onions don't make you cry. The heat destorys the enzymes that produce the gas that makes you cry..

use a swimming glasses.

Put the onion in the freezer for a few minutes before chopping it up.

Chew gum while chopping! Good luck!

when you chop onions make sure nothing squirts eyes

don't open your mouth while working with onions. It really works

Wear Goggles? Or make sure you use a sharp knife when cutting the onions

Keep your mouth closed when chopping them

if you get a big bowl and slice it under water your eyes will not sting...it wont ruin the onion..my uncle is a chef and he tought me that....good luck

When you figure that out you can have a Maid do it for you !!!!
As you will be so rich....you wont ever have to cut another onion in your lifetime......!!!! Been cutting onions for 40 plus years and they still burn my eyes....

Cutting Onions.
Use a very sharp knife, and slice, don't chop, or just push your knife down through them.
You could put them in the fridge for an hour.
Running under cold water will take some of the sharpness away, and it is an ideal way to tone them down if you wish to use them uncooked in a salad.

your supost to hold a piece of bread in your mouth in order to block the fumes from goign into your eyes LOL....i never do that and dont know if it works but its worth a shot. mostly you just get use to it i guess..lol.

put a motorcycle helmet on with the visor down... thats what my sister does....

Use a sharp knife and a cold onion, keep your mouth closed, be sure to cut as quickly and effeciently as possible, rinse all utensils and surfaces as soon as possible.

To get onion juice and smell off your hands, loosely hold the blade of a stainless steel butter knife, run cold water down the handle, so that it runs semi-quickly between your hand and the knife. The chemicals from the onion will be drawn towards the steel of the knife and the flow of water will sweep them away. Soap doesn't really help at all.

well i dont suffer from that problem but my hubby does i tells him to put on work goggles on then chop but if you havent got them try deep shaded sun glasses

Hold an unlit match in your mouth while chopping. The wooden kind work the best. (Sulfur side out, just so you know!)

This is going to sound crazy, but put a match in your mouth tip first. Something about the sulfur in the match deleted the fumes that the onions put off when you cut them.

store onions in the ice box and once you peel the outer layers off wash it in cold water and it should be so bad

You really can't.
