I don't know about chickens, but, non-organic, factory-farmed beef and dairy cows are often given rBGH which is bovine growth hormone. It is almost identical to human growth hormone- is sometimes detected in the meat and dairy from these animals and has been shown to cause cancer. The added grossness in the dairy area is that it causes the heifers to produce so much milk that their udders drag on the ground and they often suffer from mastitis- an infection of the teats. The blood and pus from these infections is pumped out with the milk and is allowed remain in the milk. This number is far higher in concentrated dairy like cheese, cream and butter. Farmers are required to keep the somatic cell count (SCC) under a certain number. I believe it's 700,000 cells per litre- this is 7 times higher than what is allowed in raw milk. Ewwwe! If the number go above this limit they are supposed to discard it- but most farmers simply mix it with untainted milk to bring the overall count down.

Yes, it is true. Always look for the organic label on your food.

Food is food. Agriculture has been modified and has been advancing for hundreds of years, it is nothing new , all this hype about so called organic products is just that: hype.

Does it really matter?

Growth hormones such as high concentrations of anti-biotics have been used in industrial agribusiness for many many years now. For a more efficient product, the animals are kept in enclosed areas where they are constantly fed corn rather than grass. As a result, a cow that would normally take about five years to grow to maturity can now be harvested in three. The down side for this type of raising animals is that with the overcrowding and the stress, there is a much higher probability of diseases which can ravage a herd in a very short time.

We as consumers have stated very loudly that we want to be able to drive through McDonalds and get a double cheeseburger for a dollar, or Burger King and get a Whopper Jr for a dollar, or Wendy's and get a Jr Bacon Cheeseburger for 99 cents 365 days a year. This is the reason this is now possible.
