Why is there an expiration date on buttermilk?!

Question: How do you know that buttermilk has gone bad? What happens when buttermilk goes bad? It's already sour, so what happens?

mold grows in it and it pours out in chuncks.

because its kinda like chunky milk.

in any case, its mostly milk, so its like milk.

its just milk left over after the butter is done.

producers are by LAW required to post a date for the distributer to return the (any) milk for them to recycle and refund monies to stock it to the store

Yes there is. It is just like regular milk. It can go bad. The date should be on the carton or container.

If you want to use it in baking and have some that will go to waste - freeze it. That way it keeps forever. Just put 1/2 cup in a container or even in ice cube trays - thaw it out and you've ready to bake. Freezing doesn't change it or damage it.
