It can come from cow or horse bones, connective tissue, organs, and even intestines.
Gelatin - from bovine keratin (hooves, etc)
Cow hooves.

Sugar, gelatin, adipic acid, sodium citrate, sodium phosphate, artificial flavours, fumaric acid, colour (containing tartrazine) and tricalcium phosphate.

Gelatin is made by boiling bones & ligaments from various animals (the same way you make a soup stock base).
"Jello" is made of Sugar, Sugar, Sugar, gelatin, adipic acid (for tartness), less than 2% of artificial flavor, disodium phosphate & sodium citrate (to control acidity), furmaric acid (again for tartness), coloring depending on the flavor and in my house either vodka or rum.
The gelatin part is of obviously derived from things it's better not to really know where they came from. Just as is what a hot dog is made of.
If your friend told you horse hooves, he was pulling your leg or he's misinformed. pick up a package in the grocery and read the ingredients, the main one is sugar.
