When you go to a buffet, either at a restaurant or a formal dinner, do you expect to plate the food yourself?!
Personally I have never seen the latter anywhere (except with carving stations and flambeed dessert stations) and I tend to think it defeats the purpose of a buffet, because you aren't able to get as little or much as you want since the other person is judging how much you get.
Answers: Or for there to be waitstaff to dish it up for you?

I expect to dish it up myself & prefer it that way.:)
Myself
a buffet is... kind of by definition one where you go up yourself.
i always plate it myself when i go to a buffet, that's they way they work here in cali
Buffet to me suggests self service.
That should only happen in school or jail.
I would say by yourself, I've never seen it any other way.
if they do it for you that sucks because ya u dont get wut u want but wen they carve the meat u can gte all u want os thats not to big of a deal to me
if its a buffet then you should get it yourself. that half the point. you get what you want n how much you want. just 'picky' food. so you just pick them up
I expect to be able to dish it up myself.
You seem to have answered your own question exactly the way I would have answered it! I expect to play the food myself except when there is a carving station or something similar.
been to both--staff serving food does not matter you can always go back for more or request more at time of serving
I always plate the food myself
I've seen it both ways, and since it's a buffet have never given it a moment's thought as I can always go back for more if something is that delicious. I think the serve-yourself buffet is much more casual and is gaining in popularity in semi-formal occasions as well as casual ones.
Yes and No. Yes if you want to select only the food you like to eat. No, you can always the waiters around to get the food for you for a little tip.
Normally you do it yourself. I have been to dinners and restaurants that also do it for you. This is basically for their benefit so they can control how much food you get. And if they serve at a buffet in a restaurant then it usually isn't an "all you can eat".
I've never been to a buffet where I didn't get to serve myself and return as often as I liked for refills.
I've seen it both ways. Usually the costlier items are served by waitstaff.
It is cost effective for the facility because less staff is needed. One could always go back for second helpings.
Myself I'd be slapping those stinchy little hands off my plate lol I paid for it buzz off and let me get my fill. Or I'll take my business else where cause this is no buffet. If there are people serving u behind I wouldn't care slap it on who cares what they think. If u say three spoonfuls the better bloody well give u three spoonfuls without cocking an eyebrow ur way
You pretty much serve yourself.
I would do it myself if i did go to a place like that... isnt that the whole point of a buffet? I really dont like buffet's though cause it makes me think that we are impatient and cant wait for the food to get there...kinda like glutoney...i know i am weird :)
Well, I expect the waitstaff to do it for me.
They are trying to control the portions. With a buffet, you can go ahead and get seconds if you want more of something, but only after everyone else has had their turn.
I have been to buffet's before where people were allowed to serve themselves. By the time my turn came along, all the good stuff was gone! What's fair about that? At least when the staff serves you a reasonable portion, there will at least be enough for everybody (not just the gluttons who rush to the front of the line). Once everybody has gotten some, THEN the gluttons can rush over and fight over what's left.
I happen to know that the cooks prepare more than enough of each dish. If there are 200 people, they will prepare 220 servings (except for the meat dish, then they only make 5 extra). There is no point in wasting food.
Buffet, you serve yourself..............................
yes...its not a buffet if someone serves you....it would be like a cafeteria line....
The unwritten PRINCIPLE of buffets (except Jimmy Buffet) is that YOU take what YOU want.
'since the other person is judging how much you get'
Well, that's one of the business ideas for the buffet. If all people ate as much as they could they would eat all the profits away. But because many people are conservative and generally shy they won't take too much no matter whether they can or cannot.
Also depends on the type of the buffet, some places put in more sweet ingredients and other clever stuff to make you feel fed quicker. And you're hungry again after 1 hour...
But anyways, your question was regarding self-service. Why worry, when you go there just ask the staff what is the procedure, that is hardly a shame - while you might feel you OUGHT to know the proper etiquette - there are many potato people who don't even care to find out so consider yourself to be on the better side of humanity and just ask if you are unsure. Not here but on the place. And don't worry about the smiles if you ask a stupid question, they'll forget about you the moment you leave.
Bon apetit!
If it is a buffet, then normally you dish up your own food unless there is a carving station or a special dessert section. Most buffet places that we have such as Golden Corral or King's chinese buffet all are self serve.
A buffet is defined as...
A buffet (buh-FAY) is a meal-serving system where patrons serve themselves. It is a popular method of feeding large numbers of people with minimal staff.
So I would expect to dish the food myself, and I would fully expect to overeat to the point of needing a forklift to get me out of the restaurant. :P Hey, I'm getting kinda' hungry now...thanks a lot.
Unless it is explained that someone will serve you, you should definitely serve yourself, but so you don't waste food, only take little portions of each type of food. then if you are still hungry, you may go back and get more.
At a buffet, I serve myself and take as much or as little as I want. The staff's job is to keep the food containers filled so there's enough for everyone.
If I go through a line and have someone else plop food onto my plate, that's a cafeteria, not a buffet.
At a buttet, is it expected that you plate for yourself, except when it comes to carving meat. You can always tell the carver you would like another slice or you can go back for more, that is why it is a buffet. They do not expect you to do the carving or flambe the desserts.
At a restaurant you order a set meal and it is served on one plate, unless it's a family style restaurant or a chinese, thai, restaurant and then you serve yourself from the platters served to the table.
At a formal dinner you will receive your meal plated unless they are providng French service, in which case the server will show you each platter of meats and vegetable, rolls etc and put it to your plate. They serve from the left and remove the used dishes and utensils from the right. This you cannot do in a booth.
